Woman Killed By Bus At Burning Man
September 23, 2014
A woman was recently run down by a bus carrying passengers around the Burning Man Festival, leading to questions about the safety of the event. Rescue personnel arrived quickly, but the woman was declared dead at the scene. An investigation is being undertaken by the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office in order to determine how the bus lost control. The Burning Man Festival, held annually in Black Rock Desert in Nevada, has not suffered a death for seven years, with the most recent occurring seven years ago when an attendee was crushed beneath a trailer. With this newest injury, however, it is possible that stricter safety guidelines may be recommended for subsequent festivals. No other injuries have been reported following the incident; however specific details such as the circumstances of the crash and the identity of the woman were not immediately available.
Statistics
Burning Man is a popular music festival that often brings in over 50,000 attendees annually. According to The Huffington Post, it is estimated that the festival drew crowds of more than 66,000 people this year, and last year the number of attendees was thought to have nearly reached the 70,000 mark. While most people, including festival organizers, may not see these numbers as a danger, a greater number of people can result in a higher risk of serious injury at events such as this. The festival takes place between the last Monday of August and the first Monday of September, allowing it to coincide with the Labor Day holiday. The investigation may reveal the cause of the accident. In the meantime, attendees to any crowded event are encouraged to exercise caution, particularly when crossing in front of moving vehicles.
