Three-Car Pileup In Valley Leaves One Dead

February 11, 2014

One person died and two teenagers were seriously injured in a three-car crash in the northwest valley, according to reports from the Las Vegas police. The accident occurred on Durango Drive and Tropical Parkway when a 17-year-old male driving a Nissan Frontier allegedly ran a red light and struck a 1992 Mustang. The 42-year-old woman driving the Mustang died at the scene of the crash, but the 17-year-old boy was not injured. Two teenagers who were passengers in the Mustang were also transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. The Mustang spun into a Pontiac Gran Prix, but the driver of that car was not injured. Police continue to investigate the crash. It is unclear if drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident.

INTERSECTION ACCIDENTS OFTEN DEADLY

Nevada sees an average of 55,000 traffic crashes per year, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation. In 2010, 235 people died in traffic accidents in Nevada and 18,675 were injured. This means that only .4 percent of all crashes are fatal, but 34 percent result in injuries. The top three fatal injury crash types are rear-end, angle and non-collision or single-vehicle crashes. The four counties with the highest crash statistics in 2010 were Clark County with 78.89 percent of all crashes; Washoe County with 12.13 percent; Elko County with 1.8 percent; and Carson City with 1.57 percent. Clark County also saw 57.4 percent of all fatal crashes and 82 percent of all injury crashes. Intersection crashes are often fatal or cause serious injury. This is because someone who runs a red light or a stop sign is often traveling at a very high rate of speed relative to the driver who is hit. This can cause the victim’s vehicle to spin into a stationary object such as a pole or another vehicle, as happened in this case.
