Pedestrian Identified In North Las Vegas Crash
November 14, 2012
A pedestrian killed in an accident in North Las Vegas was identified as Jasmine Bryant, 23, according to recent reports. Police continue to investigate the crash that killed the young woman as she crossed Mojave at Bonanza. Witnesses stated that the victim was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the crash. She was initially transported to an area hospital but died from her injuries. Police have stated that the person who hit Ms. Bryant was driving a pickup truck and may have been suffering from some type of medical episode at the time of the crash. After hitting the victim, the driver of the pickup continued to roll down to Pecos and Bonanza and hit two cars. The driver was transported to the hospital; the other two drivers suffered only minor injuries.
PEDESTRIAN CRASHES ACCOUNT FOR HIGH PERCENT OF LAS VEGAS DEATHS
Las Vegas is a city full of pedestrians, and the high numbers of pedestrian deaths and injuries point to this fact. According to 2011 data, Las Vegas saw nine fatal accidents involving pedestrians out of 23 total accidents. This means that pedestrians accounted for 17 percent of all people involved in fatal accidents in any capacity. This is quite a bit higher than the national average of 11 percent for pedestrian involvement in fatal accidents and points out the dangers faced by Las Vegas pedestrians every day. Part of the reason that Las Vegas pedestrians are killed and injured at a higher rate than other cities is because of the greater number of pedestrians. However, alcohol probably plays a significant role in the high number of pedestrian accidents, as well. Both drivers and pedestrians are more likely to be involved in an accident after drinking alcohol.
WHAT ABOUT A “MEDICAL CONDITION?”
While it is unclear what happened to the driver in this case, the use of the term “medical condition” leads to speculation that the driver suffered a heart attack or some sort of seizure. When this happens, it is not uncommon for a driver to cause a serious accident. In fact, many people have died in crashes in which they themselves suffered a heart attack or epileptic seizure and crashed into another vehicle. Of course, that does not mean that the insurance company is not liable for the damage caused by the driver. In order to collect that compensation, however, it may necessary for a victim to retain a personal injury attorney. High Stakes Injury Law’s injury lawyers are ready to help victims of pedestrian and other types of accidents collect the money to which they are entitled as a result of their injuries.
