Pedestrian Hospitalized After Hit-and-Run
May 14, 2013
According to Metro Police Sources, a white Ford SUV driven by an unknown individual hit a pedestrian at the intersection of Walnut Road and Las Vegas Boulevard then fled the scene. The pedestrian was hospitalized, and police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver who fled, leaving behind the injured victim. The driver was behind the wheel of a white Ford, possibly an Explorer; police estimate that it was a 2006 or 2007 model from the descriptions. They also said the vehicle would have sustained moderate front right body damage as well as undercarriage damage. According to police, the pedestrian was crossing Las Vegas Boulevard outside of the marked crosswalk when the vehicle struck him as it traveled north. The victim. Identified only as a 35-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital with serious blood loss and is listed in critical condition.
HIT-AND-RUN IS MORE COMMON THAN THOUGHT
Many people do not realize how prevalent hit-and-run crashes can be. In some major metro areas, such as Los Angeles, California, up to 50 percent of all crashes may involve a hit-and-run driver. According to a recent study, about 20 percent of all pedestrian fatalities involve hit-and-run accidents and 60 percent of all hit-and-run fatalities include pedestrian victims. One possible reason for the high number of hit-and-runs may be alcohol. Drivers who are drinking are, in most cases, less likely to stop and render aid because they are fearful of being arrested for DUI even if they were not technically “at fault” in the accident. Other reasons could be panic or an outstanding criminal warrant that leads the driver to flee.
