Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck Three Times
October 09, 2014
The Nevada Highway Patrol reports that a pedestrian was killed on U.S. 395 near Topaz Lake when he was struck by three different vehicles, two of them Douglas County Sheriff’s Office patrol cars. The victim, who has not yet been identified, was apparently standing in the road on the southbound side of the highway when he was hit by a pickup truck. The impact sent the victim hurtling into the opposite lane where two Douglas County Sheriff’s Office vehicles both struck him before the man’s body came to rest on the side of the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene. All three drivers stopped at the scene to render aid. The drivers cooperated with the investigation, which showed that the area was not lit and visibility was significantly reduced at the time of the accident. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor on the part of the victim or any of the drivers. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Nevada Highway Patrol, who is investigating the crash.
NEVADA PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT STATISTICS
According to a recent report, Las Vegas actually has a higher pedestrian accident rate than New York City. In the Valley area in 2012, more than 60 people died and dozens more were injured in pedestrian crashes. Although the numbers are concentrated in Clark County, pedestrian accidents also take place all over the state. Pedestrian accidents cost more than just the lives and injuries of those who are hit. Uninsured pedestrian injuries make up a significant portion of the money paid by taxpayers for public-funded health care at hospital emergency rooms. Every time a pedestrian is hit, either insurance companies or the government must pay high medical costs, resulting in more expense for everyone.
