Motorcyclist Killed When Ejected From Bike
September 09, 2014
A recent motorcycle crash killed a 41-year-old man when he lost control of his bike and was ejected, according to police reports. The accident occurred near Craig and Losee Roads in North Las Vegas. Johnston Graves Overbey was found dead on Donovan Way after he apparently lost control, ran off the road and was thrown from the bike. Police believe speed was a factor in the crash. While it is almost impossible to be certain about the events surrounding a crash when there are no witnesses, accident reconstruction experts can often determine the most likely crash scenario. These experts use skid marks and other physical evidence as well as the injuries sustained by the victim to formulate the most likely explanation of the accident.
MOTORCYCLES ACCIDENT STATISTICS
According to the United States Department of Transportation, in 2011 there were 4,612 motorcyclist killed in road crashes. Approximately 81,000 motorcyclist were injured during this time period as well. These numbers include mopeds, two-or three-wheeled motorcycles, off-road motorcycles, scooters, mini bikes, and pocket bikes, although larger motorcycles are involved in about 94 percent of these crashes. Forty-nine percent of motorcycle accidents are caused by the cyclist crashing into another motor vehicle.
Experts estimate that about 22 percent of riders do not hold a valid motorcycle license, and that these unlicensed and untrained people are responsible for the majority of the accidents in which the rider was at fault. When a rider is properly trained, the accident is more often the fault of the motorist. According to the NHTSA, helmet use is another factor that distinguishes careful cyclists from those who are reckless. Helmets saved over 1,500 lives in 2011 and could have prevented over 700 deaths.
