Motorcyclist Killed In US 95 Crash
July 24, 2014
According to reports from authorities, a motorcycle rider died as the result of a collision with two other vehicles on U.S. Highway 95 in Henderson. The crash took place north of Horizon drive as the male rider traveled northbound in the left lane. Law enforcement officials believe he was speeding when he hit the back of an SUV. The impact threw the rider to the right where he collided with the side of a truck. He died at the scene before rescue units arrived. Upon impact, the truck veered to the left where it struck a median. The bike and rider slide down the right shoulder into a depression. The bike was on fire when authorities arrived. A passenger in the truck was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries; neither of the occupants of the SUV were injured. Northbound U.S. 95 remained closed for hours after the accident, with westbound traffic diverted onto Horizon Ridge and eastbound traffic onto Boulder Highway.
MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS: OFTEN DEADLY
Riders on motorcycles have little protection in the case of an accident. Motorcycles typically do not feature safety equipment such as seat belts, air bags or structural protection. When someone is in a motorcycle collision with a vehicle, the chances are good that the motorcycle rider will suffer the brunt of the injuries. According to the Nevada Department Of Transportation or NDOT, the state averages about 1,000 motorcycle accidents every year.
On average, about 50 people are killed each year in motorcycle crashes throughout the state, with the highest number of victims in Clark County.
In 2010, there were 1,042 accidents involving motorcycles. Of these, 822 resulted in injury and 48 in death. This means that if you were involved in a motorcycle crash, your chances of being injured or killed were about 84 percent, a staggering number when compared to your chances of being injured or killed in a car or truck crash.
