Man Sentenced For DUI Hit-and-run Of 11-Year-Old
June 25, 2014
Rodrigo Tomax, 25, has been arrested after a hit-and-run that left an 11-year-old boy seriously injured, according to reports. Witnesses say that Tomax was driving a Honda Civic on Bonanza Road near Easter Avenue when he lost control and drove into a group of juveniles standing on the sidewalk, hitting an 11-year-old boy. The unidentified boy was rushed to University Medical Center, suffering from serious injuries including a large contusion to his eye and lacerated spleen.
Tomax fled the scene, but later turned himself in to police.
Police found Tomax’s car abandoned in a nearby neighborhood with evidence of the accident, including the front passenger-side wheel appearing dislodged from the vehicle, most likely after hitting the curb. The accident made the car virtually undriveable with only three working wheels. Tomax was arrested and booked at the Clark County Detention Center on one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident involving an injury.
A judge ordered Tomax to remain in custody and he was not released on bail.
HIT-AND-RUN: NEVADA LAW IS STRICT
Legally, all parties involved in a hit-and-run in Nevada are required to exchange information and, if an injury or death occurs, file an accident report. If a driver flees the scene of an accident, that person can face anything from misdemeanor charges to a felony. If an injury or death has occurred, it is imperative that the driver remain at the scene, especially if the accident was that driver’s fault.
