Man Loses Leg Following Horrific Automobile Accident
October 24, 2014
According to recent reports, a crash along US Highway 95 resulted in a man losing his leg. The Nevada Highway Patrol states that the accident occurred at around 5:30am along the northbound side of the highway. A vehicle seen traveling along this route collided with a wall but continued to travel until the Martin Luther King exit, where it struck a second wall. The passenger of the vehicle then stepped out of the car and was immediately struck by another passing vehicle. The man was taken to the nearby University Medical Centre with apparently life-threatening injuries, but was in stable condition the same day. The man’s leg was severed at the scene before paramedics were able to respond. The northbound stretch of Highway 95 was closed at the I-15 interchange for several hours in order to allow officers to investigate the crash. The driver of the vehicle that struck the man following the crash fled the scene immediately; however she was later caught and arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence. The other driver is also suspected of DUI; however, no further arrests have been made.
NEVADA CAR ACCIDENT STATISTICS ARE STARTLING
In recent years, Nevada has become notorious for its high number of automobile accidents. According to the Nevada Insurance Council, there were over 50,000 traffic crashes in 2010 in Nevada alone. Of this total, almost 19,000 caused injuries, and there were a total of 235 fatalities from these crashes. 157 of those killed were drivers, and 60 deaths were due to a lack of restraints used. The passengers killed were also not using restraints in many cases. Speeding, reckless or distracted driving and failure to use safety restrains are also contributing factors in a large number of these accidents. Nationwide, about one-third of all fatal crashes are due to alcohol consumption, and a growing number of crashes are due to distracted driving, particularly cell phone or mobile device use. Automobile accidents are the most common cause of death among American men and women under the age of 34.
