The unidentified driver was behind the wheel of a 1991 Toyota Celica when he allegedly failed to stop at a red light, hitting a 2014 Nissan pickup truck. SPINAL DAMAGE COMMON CAUSE OF PARALYSIS
Spinal cord injuries have become increasingly common over the years, with 2012 seeing 12,000 new injuries, according to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistics Center. This is an average of 1,000 new spinal cord injuries every month, many of which result in partial or total paralysis and permanent, life-altering injuries. At any given time, it is estimated that at least 323,000 people are living with the effects of spinal cord damage. According to statistics, spinal cord injuries are primarily a problem of young adults, although anyone of any age can be affected. About half of all SCIs occur with young people between the ages of 16 and 30.
However, as of 2010 the average age at injury is 42.6 years. About 80.7 percent of all SCIs occur with males, who are statistically more likely to engage in behaviors that put people at risk for these types of injuries. Spinal cord injuries can result in partial or total paralysis as well as loss of body organ function. While some SCIs are treatable, others result in permanent injury. Car crashes are a leading cause of SCIs as are slip-and-fall accidents.
