Drunk Driver Charged With Hit-and-Run
June 09, 2014
A man has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and the hit-and-run of a motorcyclist in Las Vegas, according to recent reports. Police say that Anthony Munoz, 29, was speeding south on Rainbow Boulevard in the northwest valley in a 2011 Kia Sorento when he collided with a 2009 Kawasaki motorcycle. The motorcyclist, an unidentified 20-year-old man, was thrown onto the road. According to police, Munoz continued south on Rainbow Boulevard.
However, Munoz appears to have lost control of the Kia Sorento, driving off the road and crashing. Police pursued Munoz and an unnamed passenger who attempted to flee on foot. Both were quickly apprehended. Police arrested Munoz on charges driving under the influence of alcohol and hit-and-run. The motorcyclist was seriously injured and transported to University Medical Center.
DUI–A PROBLEM IN NEVADA
According to statistics from the Nevada Department of Transportation, every two weeks approximately three fatal car accidents occur throughout the state in which alcohol is listed as a factor. Approximately 1,700 crashes occur in the state every year in which at least one person is seriously injured or killed because of alcohol. Though the population has been well-educated on the risks of driving under the influence, many people still make the mistake of doing it. Those who have been injured due to the negligence of a person driving under the influence of alcohol should know that the same basic legal rights and options provided by Nevada’s personal injury laws apply to crashes caused by both drivers who have or have not been drinking. Often those injured by drunk drivers have a much stronger case for compensation or restitution because they can prove the driver’s negligence through the consumption of alcohol, which played a major part in the event. Those who are victims of a drunk driver often seek compensation from their insurance companies only.
However, there are many legal avenues for receiving restitution.
