Driver Killed In Las Vegas Crash

June 26, 2014

A driver died and two others were injured in a crash between two vehicles at the intersection of Twain Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive, according to recent reports. Leyon Moysisyan, 19, died at the scene of the crash when his Hyundai crashed into an Infiniti and then into a wall and lamp post.

According to police, both cars were speeding west on Twain Avenue when the drivers lost control. The Infinity struck the rear of the Hyundai as they crossed Grand Canyon Avenue, sending both vehicles spinning out of control and onto the sidewalk. The driver of the Infiniti, Pedram Salmani, 18, and a 17-year-old unidentified passenger, were rushed to an area hospital in serious condition.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

LAS VEGAS STREETS, SPEEDING AND DRAG RACING

Las Vegas has a relatively high number of fatal car accidents each year, many of which are due to speeding or even racing and other dangerous behavior. According to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, there were 56 total fatalities due to traffic accidents in 2012, 46 fatalities in 2013 and 33 fatalities so far in 2014 through May 13.

This recent crash will bring the total to 34.

According to the police department’s data, 22 percent of all fatal crashes in Las Vegas, or nearly one out of every four, is due to speeding. Another nine percent of these crashes are due to failure to maintain lane, which can be an error in conjunction with speeding as well, while nine percent are due to failure to regard a control device such as a stop light or stop sign.

Further, 27 percent of accidents are caused by failure to yield right-of-way.

Drag racing has long been an issue that leads to dangerous accidents, particularly for young drivers. According to the National Hot Rod Association, a group dedicated to promoting safe and legal drag racing, illegal or street races, the number of drag racing-related deaths varies by year. For example, in 2000, 72 people died in street-racing fatalities, while in 2001 the number jumped to 135, or nearly double the previous year.

One factor in the number of these types of deaths is police presence; in cases in which there is a concerted effort to stop it, drag racing can be reduced.
