Dog Bite Statistics For 2013
July 02, 2014
According to a recent report, over 4.5 million Americans were bitten by dogs in the United States in 2013. While anyone can be bitten by a dog, statistically children top the list, with over 2 million bites. U.S. Postal Service Workers came in at number two, with 5,581 reported bites. According to the Insurance Information Institute, insurers across the country paid out an estimated $483 million in dog-bite claims, with State Farm paying out $104 million for 3,700 claims.
PREVENTING DOG BITES
Dogs are considered man’s best friend, but one should still exercise caution when dealing with any dog. It is important to know that all dogs can bite, no matter what their size. However, most dogs will not bite unless provoked or in a state of fear. The American Humane Association says that two-thirds of child dog bite victims are bitten in the head or neck. If you have a child, never leave him or her alone with a dog, even if the dog is a trusted family pet.
While children may innocently attempt to play with the dog, the play may not be welcome, resulting in a dog bite. Proper monitoring of children while playing with a dog is critical in greatly decreasing the risk of biting. If you or your child wishes to pet an unfamiliar dog, it is important to always ask permission first. The owner will know if the dog is friendly and would be welcome to petting.
WHAT IF I AM THE VICTIM OF A DOG BITE?
Dog owners have a responsibility to keep their pets under control and not allow them to bite others. However, this responsibility is not always met, resulting in biting and injury. Luckily, only about 20 percent of dog bites require medical attention.
However, all dog bites should be taken seriously and steps should be taken to prevent them. If you or a loved one have fallen victim to a dog bite, the dog’s owner can be held liable under Nevada Law for the injuries. As the victim, you could seek compensation for medical costs and pain and suffering associated with the dog bite.
