Decrease In Southern Nevada Vehicular Fatalities

August 21, 2014

According to authorities, the number of fatal vehicular accidents in Southern Nevada has dropped significantly during the first half of 2014, compared with the previous year.

EDUCATION IS KEY TO CRASH REDUCTION

The Southern Nevada Traffic Safety Committee concluded that during the first six months of 2014, the number of fatal vehicle crashes has dropped nearly 20 percent. The Nevada Highway Patrol reported similar findings, stating that there are 35 percent fewer fatal accidents on Nevada roads so far this year compared with the same time frame in 2013. Despite this decrease, the number of fatalities is still “way too high,” and needs to be lowered further. Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie says that safer roads start with better education. According to Gillespie, “It just can’t start when people get their driver’s licenses. It’s a process that needs to start prior to that…I think the youth of today make better decisions…They just have a lot more education on the negative impacts of drinking and driving.” Law enforcement has also amped up its efforts to make roads safer, maintaining a presence of uniformed officers and setting up DUI checkpoints and patrols. More patrols and better education seems to be paying off, as drunk driving arrests have also fallen by 25 percent compared with the same period in 2013. Along with arrests, fatal crashes involving drunken drivers has also decreased, with only 11 alcohol-related fatalities so far in 2014 compared with 15 in 2013. Motorcycle accidents, however, are still high. Two distinct groups, 18- to 25-year old men and 45- to 55-year old men, have the highest number of casualties. According to traffic Sgt. Peter Kisfalvi, fatalities among the younger group is almost exclusively from speeding and/or reckless driving, while fatalities in the older group is almost always related to alcohol.

VICTIMS OF VEHICULAR ACCIDENTS

Though the number is decreasing, many people are victims of injuries in a vehicular accident due to the negligence of another driver. Texting or drinking and driving are major causes of accidents, but sometimes simple driver error or inattention can result in a serious crash.
