2014 Seeing More Collisions Than 2013
September 26, 2014
So far, 2014 has seen more traffic accidents in Las Vegas than 2013. According to statistics from both years, 2013 saw a total of 14,255 traffic accidents or 1,188 per month. So far in 2014, there have been 8,605 accidents through August 5 for an average of 1,220 per month. However, as the year is not over, it is too early to say if 2014’s overall numbers will be lower or higher than 2013’s.
WHY ARE THERE MORE TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS?
In order to understand the jump in traffic accident numbers, it is important to consider a number of factors. First, as the economy improves, more people are on the road. Families are taking more vacations and more people have jobs, leading to more cars, bikes and foot traffic than in 2013. The sheer increase in numbers may be a reason for the higher number of traffic accidents. However, the average of traffic accidents should not change so greatly relative to the number of people on the road. Therefore, there may be other reasons for the increase. For example, the statistics show that 39 percent of all fatal accidents in Las Vegas are pedestrian crashes. This number has been steadily increasing over the past few years; 2012 saw 26 fatal pedestrian accidents and 2013 saw 30.
It is possible that a spike in pedestrian deaths can make the numbers appear larger. Furthermore, motorcyclists continue to die at a higher rate than anyone except pedestrians. So far, 13 motorcyclists have been killed in 2014 in Las Vegas, the same number as in the entire year of 2013 and one less than the entire year of 2012. Pedestrian and motorcycle fatalities make up 65 percent of all fatal accidents in Las Vegas so far this year.
